Preparations | Preparativos

After calming the emotions of being selected for the program, the commitments and preparations began. A very positive point is that the exchange agency always assisted me with everything and answered all my questions. As a minor, I needed to arrange several authorizations, and they also guided me through the passport process. Additionally, there were many online meetings where they provided tips and guidance on everything from how to behave, what to pack, and even how to improve our English.

Após acalmar as emoções de ter sido selecionado para o programa, vem os compromissos e preparações. Um ponto muito positivo é que a empresa de intercâmbio sempre me auxiliou em tudo e tirou todas as minhas dúvidas. Foi necessário providenciar várias autorizações como sou de menor, e eles também me encaminharam para que o passaporte pudesse ser feito. Além disso, houve muitas reuniões on-line, onde nos forneceram muitas dicas e orientações, desde como se comportar, o que levar e até mesmo como melhorar nosso Inglês.

The Journey | A Viagem

Regarding the trip, there were many expectations. I traveled to the state capital on the first day of 2025, and on January 2, the big day of my departure finally arrived. It was my first time flying on a plane, which brought great excitement after so much preparation, but I was already certain it would be worth it. Subsequently, I had my second and third flights, over a period of more than a day with long hours of travel: from Curitiba to São Paulo, São Paulo to Madrid, and Madrid to Dublin. Upon arriving, each exchange student went to their respective destinations. In my case, I took a bus to the city of Cavan, located in County Cavan, where I stayed. I kept in touch with my host mother, who waited for me at the bus stop, welcomed me warmly, and was concerned about my well-being, including my meals. I could understand the English Language easily, with no issues regarding the accent or speaking.

Em relação à viagem, foram geradas muitas expectativas. Viajei para a capital do estado no primeiro dia do ano de 2025, e no dia 2, finalmente havia chegado o grande dia de minha decolagem, foi minha primeira vez voando de avião, houve grande emoção, depois de tanto tempo de preparação, mas eu já estava certo de que valeria à pena, e consecutivamente, também tive a segunda e terceira vez, no período de mais de um dia, sendo longas horas de voô, de Curitiba à São Paulo, São Paulo à Madri, e Madri a Dublin, e finalmente, chegando lá, cada intercambista seguiu seus destinos. No caso de alguns, como o meu, pegamos o ônibus para a cidade de Cavan, situada no Condado de Cavan, que foi onde fiquei. Mantive contato com a minha mãe-anfitriã, que me esperou no ponto, me recebeu muito bem, e se preocupou com meu bem-estar, incluindo alimentação. Inclusive, eu conseguia entender a Língua Inglesa com facilidade, não tive problemas com isso, nem mesmo com o sotaque ou na fala.

My Routine | A Minha Rotina

There, I had a few days to settle in overall, and the following week, classes started. Every day, I'd wake up, get ready, catch the bus, and head to my school, St. Bricins College, located in Belturbet, a smaller town than Cavan, about 15km away. The school day began at 9 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m., when I'd take the bus back to Cavan. In the first few months after my arrival, it was already dark by that time.
One noticeable difference was the weather. In the first few months, the average temperature was around 7°C, but it often dropped lower. That wasn't a problem for me, though, since I really enjoy cold weather. As for the environments, they were all climate-controlled.
The food was mainly based on potatoes, peas, and chicken. The meals were quite different from ours, and so were the schedules. For school, I brought a snack to eat during breaks.
Regarding adapting to school, I was warmly welcomed by students, teachers, and the entire school community. A positive point was that there were other exchange students from the program at the same school, as well as students from other countries like Ukraine, Germany, Syria, Spain, Bulgaria, and more.
I didn't have much trouble adapting to studies since I was in the transition year, an optional year different from traditional ones, with more extracurricular activities.
One of the most memorable experiences was the Work Experience, where I worked for two weeks instead of studying, as a way to get used to the working world. I worked in a department store that was also a supermarket, performing various tasks like restocking shelves, pricing items, and checking expiration dates. I really enjoyed and made the most of this opportunity. The other workers were very friendly and helped me whenever needed. I also improved some of my skills, like organization, observation, and interacting with people.
Every Friday, we went to the Cavan Institute, engaging in various activities like sports, cooking, music production, and more. On weekends, I'd usually hang out with my friends, and it was definitely great—I learned a lot, even from other Brazilians.

Lá, tive alguns dias para a minha adaptação no geral, e na semana seguinte, começaram as aulas. Todos os dias, eu acordava, me preparava, pegava o ônibus, e ia para meu colégio, St. Bricins College, que fica situado em Belturbet, cidade menor que Cavan, à 15km de lá. O dia letivo iniciava às 9 horas da manhã, e se encerrava as 16 horas da tarde, em que eu pegava o ônibus de volta à Cavan, e nos primeiros meses após minha chegada, nesse horário já estava escuro.
Uma diferença notável foi o clima, nos primeiros meses costumava fazer em média 7ºC, mas a temperatura caia abaixo disso, mas isso não era problema para mim, já que eu gosto muito do clima frio. Quanto aos ambientes, eram todos climatizados.
A alimentação se baseava principalmente em batatas, ervilhas e frango, as refeições são bem diferentes das nossas e os horários também. Para a escola, eu levava um lanche para comer durantes os intervalos.
Sobre a adaptação na escola, fui bem recebido por alunos, professores e toda a comunidade escolar. Um ponto positivo é que também havia outros intercambistas do Programa comigo na mesma escola, e também estudantes com outroas nacionalidades, como da Ucrânia, Alemanha, Síria, Espanha, Bulgaria, entre outros países.
Não tive muitas dificuldades de adaptação nos estudos, pois já estava no ano de transição, um ano optativo diferente dos tradicionais, com mais atividades extracurriculares.
Uma das experiências mais marcantes foi a Work Experience, onde trabalhei por duas semanas ao invés de estudar, o que era um método de aprendizado para irmos nos ambientando ao mundo do trabalho. Trabalhei em uma loja de departamentos que também era supermercado, desempenhando diversas funções, como reabastecer estoque, colocar preços e verificar validades. Gostei e aproveitei muito essa oportunidade, os outros trabalhadores eram muito amigáveis, e me auxiliavam sempre que necessário. Também, melhorei algumas de minhas habilidades, como organização, observação e também a interação com pessoas.
Todas as sextas-feiras, íamos ao Instituto de Cavan, involvendo-nos em diversas atividades, como atividades físicas, culinária, produção musical, entre outros. Nos fins de semana, eu costumava sair com meus amigos e certamente foi bom, aprendi muito até mesmo com outros brasileiros.

Conclusion and Reflections | Encerramento e Reflexões

The exchange program was a unique experience, a great opportunity not only to improve my English skills but also for personal growth, discovering new cultures, and gaining appreciation.
If you have the desire to do an exchange program, it's worth the experience, as long as you're responsible, respect cultural differences, and live the experience fully and safely.

O Intercâmbio foi uma experiência única, uma grande oportunidade não só para aprimorar minhas habilidades em inglês, mas também para crescimento pessoal, descobertas de novas culturas e valorização.
Se você tem o desejo de fazer o intercâmbio, vale a pena a experiência, desde que você seja responsável, respeite as diferenças culturais e viva a experiência de forma plena e segura.

How I Learnt | Como Aprendi

Even before I knew about the Exchange Program, English was already part of my life, especially on social media, watching videos, using apps, or even playing games, and I already had a good performance. That's how I learned what I knew before starting the preparation for the exchange. In fact, after being selected for the program, I got access to the English learning platform, Inglês Professor, which offers various activities and even live classes, further improving my English, especially my pronunciation, which was the part I struggled with the most. At first, I didn't notice that my communication had improved, but the people around me noticed a progress in how I expressed myself. I still continue using the foreign language in my daily life.

Antes mesmo de saber sobre o Programa de Intercâmbio, o Inglês já fazia parte da minha vida, principalmente em redes sociais, assistindo vídeos, fazendo uso de aplicativos ou até mesmo utilizando jogos, e eu já tinha um bom desempenho. Deste modo aprendi o que eu sabia até antes do início da preparação para o intercâmbio, inclusive, após a minha classificação no programa, foi disponibilizado o acesso a plataforma de aprendizado de Inglês, Inglês Professor, em que são disponibilizadas diversas atividades e inclusive aulas ao vivo, o que melhorou meu Inglês ainda mais, principalmente na pronúncia, o que era a parte em que eu possuía mais dificuldade. E na Irlanda, aprendi ainda mais, da melhor forma, convivendo e aprendendo com a imersõo no idioma.
Inicialmente não percebi que a minha forma de comunicação havia melhorado, mas as pessoas que conviviam comigo perceberam uma evolução na minha forma de expressão. Eu ainda continuo utilizando a língua estrangeira no meu dia-a-dia.

Every effort to learn English is important. If you want to improve your English, use every resource you can, for example, as a student in Paraná's public school system, students have access to the Inglês Paraná platform, a great ally. Another resource is the Duolingo app, but there are other apps, websites, and online teachers that can help during the process, for instance, you can watch movies in Portuguese with English subtitles or vice versa. Like me, you can consume any kind of content on the internet in English, including games.

Todo esforço para aprender Inglês é importante, se você pretende melhorar seu Inglês, use todo recurso que você puder, como por exemplo, como aluno da rede pública do ensino do Paraná, os alunos têm acesso à plataforma do Inglês Paraná, uma grande aliada. English is today one of the most spoken languages in the world. Even in countries where it's not official, it's used in daily life, among ordinary people, in important positions, and in trade between countries.
In life, it opens many doors and paths for everyone. Just knowing the basics allows you to meet new people or gain more knowledge, as it expands your limits, like accessing websites and playing games that don't have translations, offering many more opportunities.

O Inglês é hoje uma das línguas mais faladas no mundo. Mesmo em países onde não é oficial, ele é usado no dia a dia, entre pessoas comuns, em cargos importantes e no comércio entre países.
Na vida, ele abre muitas portas e caminhos para todos, basta saber o básico e você já pode conhecer novas pessoas ou adquirir mais conhecimentos, já que isso expande seus limites, como acessar sites e jogar jogos que não possuem tradução, oferecendo muito mais oportunidades.

A bit of History | Um pouco de história

Ireland, fondly called the "Emerald Isle", is bursting with vibrant history and culture. Ancient sites like Newgrange, from 3200 BC, prove the island's story stretches back further than Egypt's pyramids. In the Middle Ages, Irish monasteries were beacons of learning, preserving Europe's wisdom. St. Patrick introduced Christianity in the 5th century, shaping the Irish spirit. Celtic heritage, with its myths, music, and Gaelic tongue, still thrives. The Great Famine (1845-1852) hit hard, sparking mass emigration. The fight for freedom led to the Irish Free State in 1922. Today, Ireland shines through its literature, lively traditional music, spirited dances, and joyful celebrations like St. Patrick's Day.

A Irlanda, apelidada de "Ilha Esmeralda", tem uma história e cultura vibrantes. Há milhares de anos, sítios como Newgrange, de 3200 a.C., mostram a antiguidade da ilha, mais velha que as pirâmides egípcias. Na Idade Média, mosteiros irlandeses eram faróis de conhecimento, guardando a sabedoria da Europa. São Patrício trouxe o cristianismo no século V, marcando profundamente a alma irlandesa.
